I could write about the Stafford-Goff trade. Too bad, this is a Bears website, and we have some coaching hires to get to.
The Bears have hired 3 position coaches. Chris Rumph as Defensive Line Coach, Bill McGovern as Inside Linebackers Coach, and they promoted defensive pass analyst and assistant linebackers coach Bill Shuey to Outside Linebackers Coach. They also hired longtime safety Mike Adams as an assistant defensive backs coach under Deshea Townshend. Rumph replaces Jay Rodgers (Chargers), McGovern replaces Mark DeLeone (Lions), and Shuey replaces Ted Monachino (Falcons). Adams has connections with safety Tashaun Gipson (Teammates in Houston) and Head Coach Matt Nagy (Teammates at Delaware).
The team is also looking at former Packers defensive coordinator Mike Pettine, and Falcons senior assistant Bob Sutton, to be a senior defensive assistant.
New OLB Coach Bill Shuey
Thank you to the countless amount of people who voted on the Google Form. Your vote may have decided the outcome of some of these awards. With that being said, I will do my personal awards later today as well. Anyways, lets see the awards.
Offensive Player of the Year
The nominees are:
Mitchell Trubisky
Cordarrelle Patterson
David Montgomery
Allen Robinson
...and the winner is: David Montgomery with 40% of the vote
I was not really expecting Monty to win this. I thought it would be A-Rob. The final percentages are:
Trubisky: 10%
Patterson: 10%
Montgomery: 40%
Robinson: 30%
Other: 10%
Defensive Player of the Year
The nominees are:
Akeim Hicks
Khalil Mack
Roquan Smith
Danny Trevathan
...and the winner is: Khalil Mack with 50% of the vote
This was by far the closest of all. Roquan took an early lead and kept it at 50/50 with Mack. That is, until Mack gained one more vote thanks to someone voting for Akeim Hicks, who I thought would get more than 10% of the vote. The final percentages are:
Hicks: 10%
Mack: 50%
Smith: 40%
Trevathan: 0%
Special Teams Player of the Year
The nominees are:
Cairo Santos
Cordarrelle Patterson
Pat O'Donnell
Pat Scales (forgot to add him but he's a really important player)
...and the winner is: Cairo Santos with 60% of the vote
So you guys really had only three options for this. Santos, Patterson, and O'Donnell. Pat Scales wasn't added, but long snapper is actually an important position on Special Teams. Anyways, Santos had a runaway early, until Patterson pushed back and made a 50/50 split. It came down to the last vote, but Santos took it. The final percentages are:
Santos: 60%
Patterson: 40%
O'Donnell: 0%
Scales: 0%
Breakout Player of the Year
The nominees are:
David Montgomery
Darnell Mooney
Bilal Nichols
Brent Urban
...and the winner is: Darnell Mooney with 60% of the vote
Another one vote decider. Mooney was actually the runaway candidate for a bit, like Santos. Montgomery came back though, and forced another 60/40 split. Nichols surprisingly didn't get any votes, same with Urban. The final percentages are:
Montgomery: 40%
Mooney: 60%
Nichols: 0%
Urban: 0%
Secondary (CB, S) Player of the Year
The nominees are:
Kyle Fuller
Jaylon Johnson
Eddie Jackson
Tashaun Gipson
...and the winner is: Kyle Fuller with 50% of the vote
While everyone at least got one vote, Fuller by far had the largest margin of victory. He had a 20% lead over the next highest vote, Eddie Jackson. The final percentages are:
Fuller: 50%
Johnson: 10%
Jackson: 30%
Gipson: 10%
And now, the award you've all been waiting for...
Most Valuable Player (MVP)
The nominees are:
David Montgomery
Allen Robinson
Khalil Mack
Roquan Smith
...and the winner of the 2020 Chicago Bear Cave Fan Award MVP is: David Montgomery with 40% of the vote! Congrats David.
This was a 40/30/20/10 split in the EXACT ORDER you see under nominees. That's just how things worked out. I was expecting A-Rob to win this but with Montgomery's breakout second half, he did enough to earn your guys vote. The final percentages are:
Montgomery: 40%
Robinson: 30%
Mack: 20%
Smith: 10%
Thank you so much for your vote. Now let's check out some other awards submitted by you guys.
The first award is Offensive Lineman of the Year, which goes to Guard Cody Whitehair. This was submitted by an anonymous person.
The second award is Rookie of the Year. This was submitted by Carter H (AKA the other guy on the Bearcast) and this award goes to Tight End Cole Kmet.
The final award is #1 Commenter Award. This was submitted by Amy S, and this award goes to Eddie Jackson because while he never commented, he liked one of my IG posts and that's what matters. Again, thank you to all who filled out the form.

The Bears have resigned running back Ryan Nall. He was scheduled to become an exclusive right free agent (ERFA). This will now round out a running back core of David Montgomery, Tarik Cohen, Artavis Pierce, and I guess Cordarrelle Patterson. Pierce played under Pitre at Oregon State.
The major news today though came out of Seattle. While not formally requesting a trade, QB Russell Wilson's agent gave reporter Adam Schefter the 4 teams Wilson would be interested in waiving his no trade clause for. The Raiders, Saints, Cowboys, and you guessed it, Da Bears! Tomorrow I might do a few trade packages for him.
One other thing I should say is that the McCaskey's should look towards acquiring the Arlington Heights Horse Racing Course to build a new stadium there. It is actually more land then SoFi Stadium takes up. Not only would it benefit the Bears, but we could host Super Bowls and Final Fours.
Well one of my mock offseason moves happened with the release of Buster Skrine (Spoilers). The move is a great move towards resigning A-Rob and others. I wish Skrine well on the rest of his career, but now the team will need to find a replacement (just wait for Mock Offseason). The team also announced 2 coaching hires. Former Texas Longhorns Head Coach Tom Herman has been hired as an Offensive Analyst/Special Projects. He went 32-18 in 4 years including a 4-0 record in Bowl Games. He was also at Houston University before his stint at UT. The team has also hired Anthony Hibbert as an Assistant Strength Coach. He also held that position at Oklahoma State.
The deadline for Franchise Tags is March 9th, and Free Agency begins March 11th.
Back to back two major pieces of Bears info came out. The latter was arguably more important. The first piece of information is the news that former RG Kyle Long is coming out of retirement. However, the Bears terminated his rights last year, making him a current free agent. He will likely not come back, as he has regularly expressed frustration with the staff. The second news is that the team franchise tagged star wide receiver Allen Robinson. The last time the team tagged a wide receiver was Alshon Jeffery in 2016, and the last overall tag was in 2018 when the team transition tagged Kyle Fuller. The tag is worth $18 million, so I don't know why A-Rob would demand a trade if he wants $18 mil a year. I still support him though in his negotiations with Pace.
The compensatory selections in the upcoming draft have been revealed, and the Bears have two. This is because they signed Robert Quinn last year, and lost Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Nick Kwiatkowski, Chase Daniel and Nick Williams. They only have two because of financial reasons I don't understand. The Bears will now select 220th and 227th in the 6th round, with the latter being the last pick in the 6th round. The team last had a compensatory pick in 2009 (they had one in the 4th round last year but traded it to Jacksonville for Nick Foles). That pick in '09 was offensive lineman Lance Louis in the 7th round. They also had a 3rd round compensatory selection that year, when they took receiver Juan Iglesias. The Bears now have 8 picks this year.
2009 Compensatory Selection Lance Louis
The Bears have resigned placekicker Cairo Santos.
The deal is a 5 year, up to 17.5 million dollar deal. However, the last two years are voidable, meaning it's truly a 3 year, 9 million deal worth up to 11 million in incentives. Santos enjoyed a great season last year, kicking 30-32 field goals (and not missing since week 3) and 36-37 extra points (miss was blocked).
The Bears are bringing back Defensive End Mario Edwards on a three year deal.
The deal is worth $11 Million, or about $3.6 million per year. This comes shortly after the Bears restructured the base salaries of Khalil Mack, Cody Whitehair and Eddie Jackson into signing bonuses, freeing about $23 million in cap space. With the Edwards deal, the Bears have about $0.4 million cap space.
The reserve defensive lineman was a nice addition to the team last year. If you haven't been living under a rock, you'd know that he's the inspiration for this website. I got the notification that the Bears signed him and thought it would be cool to make a website and write an article on this. Edwards contributed 4 sacks, 17 tackles, and 6 TFL.
Ryan Pace has reportedly checked in with free agent tackle Trent Williams. This could be a good move to land Russell Wilson. Williams is the top left tackle available, and we would need to spend a good chunk of money to secure his services. Williams is 32 (33 by season opener), and that is the prime age of an NFL lineman. The Bears will also have some competition, so get on it Pace.
The Bears are still searching for their franchise QB, but Pace may look for yet another bridge.
It has been reported that the team is showing significant interest in him and are the top contenders. If this move happens, it is almost certain that they will draft a QB and have Foles/Dalton/Rookie compete for the starting job. After all, Nagy, Pace, and another representative of the team were spotted at North Dakota State’s Pro Day, where first round talent Trey Lance put on a show. Also at the Pro Day was potential second round tackle Dillon Radunz, who the Bears should take if they can.
The Bears have signed former Bengals and Cowboys quarterback Andy Dalton to a one year deal worth 10 million dollars and an added 3 million in incentives. This comes following the refusal of Russell Wilson by Seattle. This move of signing Dalton likely takes them out of Wilson and Watson entirely, but doesn't rule out Minshew or Darnold. Another option would be to draft a QB and have Dalton and Foles compete for the backup spot.
The Bears are actively shopping wide receiver Anthony Miller, with Adam Schefter saying that he will likely be dealt. This comes after an ejection in the Wild Card round against New Orleans. He was pretty underwhelming this year, getting demoted to our 3rd String receiver. He has scored 4 touchdowns the last 2 years compared to the 7 his rookie year.
The team also resigned tackle Germain Ifedi to a one year deal worth $5 million. A former first round pick in 2016 by Seattle, Ifedi was solid last year. This should give cover for Andy Dalton.
Happy Birthday to the person who actually owns this domain, my father.
Even though this has been rumored for around a month now, NFL owners have agreed to expand the season to 17 games. This means that the Bears will now travel to Las Vegas to play the Raiders. The preseason has been shortened to 3 games as a result of this move.
In other Bears news, Mac Jones reportedly "talked football for about an hour" with the Bears. Could a potential trade up come soon? Find out on tomorrow's podcast.
Roquan Smith has won the 2020 Chicago Bears Ed Block Award. This is an award given to one player on each team who shows commitment to sportsmanship, courage, and is an inspiration in the teams locker room. This award is voted on by the players, and the winner is considered a community role model.
Smith told ChicagoBears.com, the team's website, "It's a tremendous honor for me...Being voted on by my teammates , I think that speaks volume, just having your peers vote for you and think you deserve this award. That means a lot to me just because of the brotherhood we have."
Ed Block was a longtime trainer of the Baltimore Colts, and him and his wife dedicated their lives to helping children in distress by being foster parents and advisors.
The Chicago Bears have officially signed multiple members of their 2021 Draft Class. These are OT Larry Borom, RB Khalil Herbert, WR Dazz Newsome, CB Thomas Graham, and DT Khyiris Tonga. All have been signed to three year deals. The only two left to sign are first round QB Justin Fields (likely a four year deal with a fifth year option) and second round OT Teven Jenkins (again, likely a four year deal). The holdup is likely due to salary constraints and the visitation of RT Morgan Moses, who was cut by Washington recently and had a great meeting with the Bears yesterday.
Bears rookie quarterback Justin Fields has signed a rookie deal with the team.
Over the next 4 years, Fields will make $18 million, and the deal includes an $11 million signing bonus. Because of rookie contract constraints, Fields couldn't make more or less. Bears fans have had a great reaction to this news. These reactions come from Twitter, Instagram, everywhere basically. Fields even got a standing ovation at a finally full crowded Wrigley Field today. He was in attendance with other rookies Thomas Graham and Khalil Herbert.
With the signing of Fields it means that the only Bears draftee not to be signed is tackle Teven Jenkins.
CEO and Team President Ted Phillips has stated that the team has submitted a bid to buy the available for purchase Arlington Heights Racecourse. It is unknown how high the bid was. The announcement was first made by the Bears Official Twitter.
The property was recently put up for sale, and is the latest instance of an Arlington Park stadium rumor. The mayor of Arlington Park recently said the Bears were 'seriously considering' moving to his town. Fans feel conflicted about this rumor though. There was a 53-47 ratio favoring Arlington Park on an Instagram poll I did a few days ago. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot stated that the Bears should be focusing on beating the Packers more than this, and that they can't and won't leave until their lease expires in 2033.
It is expected that the Bears will try to acquire the Soldier Field naming rights if a stadium project occurs. The team recently did some small renos to Soldier Field in 2015 and 2019.
In other news, Teven Jenkins signed his rookie contract, completing the rookie class.
We have now made it through the Bears minicamps. Obviously the major talking point was Justin Fields and his development throughout the duration of camp. We've gathered a lot of info about Justin's skill, his work ethic, and his personality. With that, I have a few impressions of him for the future.
1. Fields Is A Hard-Worker
Justin Fields is going to get better everyday. That's what he wants, no days off. There was a redzone INT he threw and he said that there is a 99% chance that mistake doesn't happen again. He actually wants to fix the mistake instead of let it go until a crucial moment where he wished he fixed it. He's not a last guy in, first guy out type of person like Dan Orlovsky foolishly claimed, he's more the opposite. A first guy in, last guy out type of player. He will also be showing up to training camp two weeks early to learn the playbook and meet with the offensive coaches.
2. Fields Will Do Anything To Get Better (Even If It Means Sacrificing Family Vacation Time)
Justin Fields said that his summer plans were to go on vacation with his family. A follow up report by Bleacher Report said that Fields will be studying the playbook everyday he is on vacation. This is the true meaning of no days off. Now, that doesn't mean he will study it 24/7. But it shows that he values his job and his team.
3. Fields Has Great Mentors
Fields said in an earlier press conference that he has enjoyed working with Andy Dalton so far and he has been a great mentor to him. Nick Foles is also around to help guide Fields through the playbook and teach him about NFL defenses. Heck, even Chad Ochocinco chimed in and told Fields to throw to Allen Robinson. If Fields listens to these people he will be a great quarterback.
4. Fields Understands His Role On The Team
We didn't know what to expect out of Fields behavior, whether he would demand the starting job or not. We've learned that Fields understands that he has to be patient and learn behind Andy while also learning how to be QB1 for an NFL team.
The Chicago Bears have made some significant roster moves the last 24 hours.
The first of those being the trade of Anthony Miller. Now, Miller has been rumored to be traded for a long time, especially after he shoved Saints safety CJ Gardner-Johnson in the Wild Card Round this past season. He has not lived up to the hype after the Bears traded up to get him in the second round of the 2018 draft. He finishes his Bears career with 134 receptions with 1,564 yards and 11 touchdowns. Miller was traded to the Texans, and we will also have a late round pick swap. We don't know the picks, so we could basically be giving him up for nothing.
The next move we made was placing two offensive weapons on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) List. These weapons are Running Back Tarik Cohen and Sixth Round Pick Wide Receiver Dazz Newsome. Cohen is still recovering from a Torn ACL suffered in Week 3 against Atlanta last season. Newsome is recovering from a Broken Collarbone, which he suffered earlier in the offseason. The hope is that the two can be up and ready for the regular season.
